Two Palm Beach County locals want to help Jupiter discover and explore the world of coffee.
Their coffee shop, Crux Coffee Roasters—named for the Crux constellation frequently used for navigation—is expected to open in downtown Abacoa by early April.
“We want people to come in and try all the different coffees from around the world and discover what taste they like the best,” co-owner Dan Rudden said.
He and his wife, Victoria, who live in West Palm Beach, decided to open up a specialty coffee shop in the area after discovering their love of roasting at home.
Both bring with them restaurant industry experience. Dan’s grandfather owned an Italian restaurant in Jersey City, New Jersey, and Victoria’s family in Colombia had a chain of bakeries in Bogota.
“We both really enjoy coffee, and roasting coffee has been something we’ve been doing for a couple of years now,” said Rudden, adding that Colombians like his wife take their coffee seriously.
Crux Coffee will offer bean varieties from about 10 different countries. All of them will be freshly ground and roasted so that every coffee cup is made to order.
In addition, Crux will offer traditional espresso drinks, lattes, cappuccinos, cold brew coffee on tap, and even nitrogen coffee—a unique cold brew infused with nitrogen that produces a smooth and creamy coffee texture, almost like a Guinness beer.
The shop will also sell baked goods to accompany their coffee, as well as handcrafted Italian sodas for kids. Grab-and-go coffee will be available for customers who don’t have the time to wait for a fresh roasted cup.
The family atmosphere of downtown Abacoa is a good fit for the concept, Rudden said. He also expects college students from Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus to use Crux Coffee as a place to meet up and study.
The 2,000-square-foot shop will offer indoor space for guests to hang out comfortably, as well as outdoor seating.
“People are really looking for an area where they can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee,” he said.
Rudden added that he expects education about the coffee varieties and brewing techniques to be an important component of the coffee shop.
“A lot of the specialty coffee places out there are a little intimidating to people who might not know about it,” he said. “We want to make high-quality coffee more mainstream.”
