It was supposed to be a hobby. Shelly Bascetta explains this from across a dining room table in Pineapple, Palms, Etc.—a Jupiter store she’s co-owned with her sister, Lisa Peterson, for the last 15 years. She and Peterson had some free time once their children were grown, so they decided to open the home decorating and furniture store—a little side project. “Our first day it sort of blew up,” she says. Since, Bascetta says their biggest challenge has been maintaining enough inventory—a good problem to have.

Always something new

On a Tuesday morning, striped navy throw pillows decorate white arm chairs set between coffee and end tables, but Bascetta says it could all be gone by the end of the day. In fact, most of the white linen covered furniture, massive modern art pieces and decorative picture frames will be plucked and replaced during today’s store hours. Pineapples, Palms, Etc. receives new arrivals daily, and Bascetta is constantly switching up display rooms with new shipments of Aerin light fixtures and Ralph Lauren rugs. Much of the store’s integrity rests on its promise to bring in rare pieces, so Bascetta only orders in one or two of each item. “It never gets stale or boring in here,” says Cindy Larschan, manager and curator of the online store, pineapplespalms.com.

Buy from home, or request a professional

On the Pineapples, Palms, Etc. website, which recently launched, online shoppers not only find uncommon pieces, but they also get behind a cause. Five percent of website sales go to Els for Autism, benefiting Jupiter’s Els Center of Excellence. The store chose to support this cause because professional golfer Ernie Els and his wife are regular customers. Families like the Els not only find the store to be a resource, but many times they’ll hire one of Pineapple, Palms, Etc.’s five designers to decorate entire homes.

Anyone, at any price tag

While Pineapples, Palms, Etc. offers such services to big-time clients, the store also believes in having something for everyone. The store’s shopper is anywhere from 25 to 75 years old, and prices range from $10 to $10,000. While larger furniture pieces and works of art merit higher price tags, smaller items by the cash register, like jewelry from UNOde50 and Lat & Lo, hand-blown wine glasses, and Pineapple’s, Palms, Etc.’s own candle line, are available for much less.
