When Sarah Rossi and Taylor Ivey first met, they were business owners appearing at the same trunk shows and pop-ups in Nantucket selling items from their respective brands Beau & Ro Bag Company and Ellsworth & Ivey. Soon after becoming friends, they decided to team up and create a seasonal space together in 2016. They opened The Skinny Dip, aptly named for their retail location on the Massachusetts island. With the success of the first store, they went on to launch a year-round location in Charleston, South Carolina, and most recently a Palm Beach storefront, which opened in the fall.
A Collective
The Skinny Dip is a collective concept store. The idea came to fruition when Rossi and Ivey opened their first brick-and-mortar, realizing the space was much too big to only showcase their own labels. The solution? “We brought in other synergistic brands—brands that we admire or that we knew personally,” Rossi says.
They offer a curated mix of 45 brands from designers across the country showcasing men’s, women’s and kids clothing alongside home and lifestyle goods. Each brand’s products are displayed for six months with the option to renew. New brands are swapped in throughout the year.
“What we do is we give brands the opportunity to truly own the space that they’re in and showcase their collection the way they intended it to be designed,” Rossi says.
This is achieved using signage throughout the store with the words “The Skinny on … ,” detailing each brand’s identity.
From Solid & Striped bathing suits and Hedge tennis gear to printed bohemian looks from Guadalupe and sophisticated pieces from Lauren James, there are items for every style. Plus, peruse kitschy home goods (think pink flamingo wrapping paper) and items representative of Palm Beach, like canvas prints, scarves, coasters and more. Accessories are aplenty, including Katie Bartels colorful earrings designed in her Manhattan studio.
Guests can also stop by the wine and coffee bar next to a greenery wall with flowers perfect for a photo op. It’s part of the shop’s mission to not only enjoy a retail environment but a lifestyle experience as well.
