21 Questions With Ariana Rockefeller

Magnanimity’s often the concession of a privileged upbringing, and it’s one of the many guiding principles Ariana Rockefeller inherited from her great-great-grandfather and Standard Oil co-founder, John D. Rockefeller. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she grew up in an equine household where she learned to ride at the age of 3 and competed on her high school’s equestrian team. After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in political science, she returned to the competitive sport of showjumping. In 2011, she launched her eponymous fashion line that donates a portion of sales to charities like the Humane Society’s Equine Welfare Protection Department. An equestrian-imbued handbag collection followed five years later, and she designed a set of saddlebags for the Longines Masters of New York in late April. In May, Ariana and her family will be partnering with Christie’s to auction off David and Peggy Rockefeller’s legendary art and estate collections with all proceeds benefiting the couple’s favorite causes. Today, when she’s not training or competing, the raven-haired equestrian enjoys spending time with her husband and entrepreneur, Matthew Bucklin, at their homes in Wellington and England, and with her three horses, Out of Beag, Riosco and Chaccadella.
