The Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida received a $50,000 check from Meredith Trim and Jim Robo at the Emerald Awards in February. The gift will help support STEM initiatives for local Girl Scouts troop members across South Florida.

Being involved with Girl Scouts is not new for the Palm Beach County couple. Trim was a former troop leader for her daughter and commented, “I always liked the flexibility of the program which enabled the girls to pick their activities, from camping on the beach in Florida, to discussions about friendship and healthy living, to giving back to our communities.” That act of giving back was only reinforced by their generous gift.

A recent Girl Scouts Research Institute study showed that Girl Scouts who participate in girl-focused STEM programs develop better problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership skills. They also tend to get better grades, earn scholarships, and follow more lucrative career paths. “We know that the work we are doing, particularly in the STEM field, is helping girls get interested and excited about a field once dominated by men,” stated Johnson.

“Their financial support will allow us to make a transformative impact on our STEM program experiences allowing girls to see STEM as the foundation for a meaningful and successful future,” said Lisa Johnson, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. “It enables us to take the lead when it comes to STEM education for young women.”

GSSEF is committed to offering STEM programs for girls, both in-person and now virtually during the coronavirus pandemic. This year alone, more than 2,290 girls have participated in 43 STEM-focused programs.
