Maltz Jupiter Theatre Earns 7 Carbonell Awards For 2016, Including Best Musical For Production Of Les Miserables

Maltz Jupiter Theatre won big at last night’s Carbonell Awards.

Essentially South Florida’s equivalent of the Tonys, the awards are meant to recognize the best actors, directors, choreography, productions and more in regional theater. The 40th annual ceremony was hosted Monday, April 4, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, and Maltz Jupiter Theatre took home the most awards of all nominated theater companies.

The local theater earned seven awards—including Best Musical for Les Misérables—for three of its productions. By comparison, it won three Carbonells in 2015.

Maltz Jupiter Theatre also won in the following categories:

  • Best Director for a Musical: Mark Martino for “Les Misérables”
  • Best Actor in a Musical: Aloysius Gigl for “Les Misérables”
  • Best Sound Design: Marty Mets for “Les Misérables”
  • Best Supporting Actress in a Musical: Elizabeth Dimon for “Billy Elliot The Musical”
  • Best Choreography: Greg Graham for “Billy Elliot The Musical”
  • Best Ensemble: “Glengarry Glen Ross”

Nearby Palm Beach Dramaworks, whose theater is located in downtown West Palm Beach, earned the second most awards with a total of five. As a whole, Palm Beach County theaters led the region with 13 awards, Miami-Dade County had four wins, and Broward County, three.
