The PGA National Resort & Spa’s newest renovation project is officially underway.

An intimate group of city leaders, media representatives and hotel officials gathered for the groundbreaking of the Sports & Racquet Club on June 26.

Crews will work through the summer on the 33,000-square-foot complex, modernizing its design and installing high-tech features. The state-of-the-art sports mecca will open for business in the fall.

Highlights of the new project include re-imagined strength-training and free-weight rooms with floor-to-ceiling glass, an elevated cross-fit area ringed with windows and a new lap pool—one of the more popular amenities of the club. The tennis pro shop will get a makeover, as well, with welcome stations and lounge-style seating, contemporary, built-in retail displays and a section for children.

“We’re all about doing things differently, doing things no one else is doing,” director Paul Raymond said.

The club’s exterior will feature a covered walkway and an elegant pavilion in a tropically landscaped setting.

The groundbreaking kicks off the fourth phase of what so far has been a seven-year, $100 million revamping of the acclaimed resort and home of The Honda Classic.

In addition to the Sports & Racquet Club renovation, the new $40 million project includes property enhancements at The Spa at PGA National and the iDECK, which will see a refreshing of the 3,000-square-foot terrace outside the main lobby.

Past improvements have included the creation of the swanky iCLUB Piano Bar inside the Ironwood Steak & Seafood restaurant, the redesigning and refurnishing all 379 guest rooms and suites, the opening of the outdoor Lakeside Lawn and Palm Terrace spaces; and the renovation of Bar 91.
