Publisher's Letter: Aging Gracefully

It’s fitting that I’m writing this letter a week after turning 50—a milestone I have to say I wasn’t looking forward to. However, after celebrating in my true signature style, I’m reflecting on my life, my blessings and yes, my choices, knowing that with every year, changes are happening to my body and Father Time is marching on.

Like many of you, I want to age gracefully, be proactive in my health care and keep them guessing as to my age (well, too late for the latter!). To that end, I recently committed to a three-month detox program I started nine weeks ago through Regenerative Medicine Plus in Jupiter. This isn’t your typical over-the-counter colon cleanse, juice fasting, or “$1.41 cleanse” promoted on YouTube, but rather a comprehensive cellular detox whose motto is “fix the cell to get well.”

I didn’t realize my cells needed fixing until I did some research on the program and the method behind the madness. Cellular detox supports your ability to achieve ultimate health benefits while slowing inflammation and aging. Our world today is extremely toxic and we need to focus on the cellular level, as it’s the breakdown of cellular function that accelerates the aging process.

Dr. Sandra Kaufmann of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital created a strategic plan to combat aging on the cellular level with her chart prioritizing the antioxidants, herbs and supplements to support cell health. She envisions aging as an option, and I like that premise!

Luckily, living in South Florida we have access to the best health care in the world, making it easier to take better care of ourselves—inside and out. We have top-notch hospitals, doctors, alternative practitioners, fitness gurus and plastic surgeons, ready to restore us to our more youthful versions. In this annual medical issue, we offer the list of Top Docs by Castle Connolly Ltd.—94 physicians in 29 specialties to provide plenty of choices for your health care needs.

South Florida also births the latest fitness crazes that are sure to beat boredom and banish body fat, and in “Models of Wellness,” six of the county’s health and fitness experts offer tips on the best exercises, foods, mindfulness techniques and general tricks of the trade.

In our vast quest for improved quality of life, we’ve researched the benefits of medicinal marijuana that has been legal in Florida for a year and a half and used for a litany of conditions, illnesses and diseases. In “Cannabis That Cures," we show how CBD (the non-psychoactive component) has a positive effect on the human endocannabinoid system, naturally and safely providing relief for a variety of ailments, including inflammation and pain, which most diseases revolve around.

No excuses to get healthy! Jillian Michaels, keynote speaker at Jupiter Medical Center’s Women's Health & Wellness Conference and featured in this month's issue, says: “If you have a why to live for, you can tolerate the how.”
