Scripps Announces Virtual COVID-19 Lecture Series

The organization's scientists will share insights and cutting-edge discoveries made in the fight against coronavirus.

Scripps Research Institute has been at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19. While scientists are hard at work learning more about the virus, informing public health policies, and investigating cutting-edge treatments, Scripps, which operates a campus in Jupiter, Florida, is offering a free virtual lecture series that will allow audiences across the country to follow along. The Front Row series currently has four scheduled installments and will feature talks by Scripps scientists from the departments of Immunology & Microbiology and Medicinal Chemistry.

The series will kick off on Wednesday, April 15, with Dr. Kristian Andersen’s “Outsmarting Emerging Pathogens in an Interconnected World” lecture. In this talk, Andersen, a professor in the Department of Immunology & Microbiology, will offer insight into how the pandemic began, how it spread, and what research indicates works and doesn’t work in the fight against the virus. Scripps’ COVID-19 coverage will continue on Wednesday, April 22, as virologist Dr. Michael Farzan, professor and co-chair of the Department of Immunology & Microbiology, delivers a progress report on the potential vaccines and antiviral medicine candidates being tested to defend against coronavirus. Dr. Arnab Chatterjee, vice president of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, will share his “Leveraging the World’s Leading Drug Repurposing Collection Against COVID-19” lecture on Wednesday, May 6. It will cover how Calibr, Scripps Research’s drug development division, is approaching its search within the world’s repertoire of existing medications for antiviral drugs that could be effective against coronavirus. To round out the groundbreaking series, Dr. Dennis Burton, chair of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, will deliver his “Survivors of Coronavirus Infections May Hold the Secret to Stopping COVID-19” lecture on Wednesday, May 20. He will discuss Scripps Research’s efforts to study blood samples from people who have recovered from COVID-19 in order to improve outcomes for future patients. Click here to register.
