The Jr. Angler Tournament Starts Friday, Giving Kids The Perfect Excuse To Fish And Explore The Area

Tourists from all over the world come to South Florida to fish in its famous waters, but one tournament is giving local youth a reason to fish in their own backyards.

The Loxahatchee River District will host The River Center’s second annual Jr. Angler Tournament, which begins Friday, June 5. Anyone between the ages of 5 and 17 can participate in the catch-and-release event that encourages kids to get to know the area.

As opposed to the traditional one-day, weigh-in style tournament, participants in the Jr. Angler Tournament submit photographs and catch logs for judging. Participants are rewarded not only for the amount of fish they catch, but for the amount of different species they bring in. This ensures that participants will be exploring the rich habitat that Palm Beach and Martin counties have to offer throughout the summer.

Catch logs and photos can be submitted until July 11. Registration is $25 per angler and includes a T-shirt and an invitation to the “Tournament Fish Fry” on July 18 at noon. This is where the winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded.
