Netflix’s popular TV show, “13 Reasons Why,” stirred up national controversy over its portrayal of teen suicide, but local students are using it to start a conversation.
The show prompted Palm Beach County School District’s superintendent to send a warning letter to parents. Inspired by the letter, local Jupiter students involved with Stand UP Foundation launched a campaign for social and emotional health, using the hashtags #13ReasonsWhy and #WeStandUP.
Stand UP Foundation teens are working to bring awareness to programs already in place that address social and emotional-wellness topics for adolescents, as well as create new outreach avenues including 13 videos, 13 blog posts and more than 13 resources for struggling teens.
The Stand UP Foundation’s programs teach high school students to be leaders, peer advisers and mentors to middle school students to educate them on stress prevention techniques and to give emotional support. The #13ReasonsWhy campaign is also timed to coincide with online fundraising for the Great Give Palm Beach & Martin Counties event on May 17.
