ANGARI Foundation’s spring Ocean Expert Exchange webinar series is live! Hosted in partnership with the University of Florida Thompson Earth Systems Institute’s Scientist in Every Florida School initiative, the monthly educational events feature a 15-minute presentation by an expert in marine science and technology, followed by a Q&A session with participants. The webinars are livestreamed via Zoom and preregistration is required.

The series kicked off this morning with “Diary of a Bull Shark ─ Movement Ecology in the Everglades” with Will Sample of Florida International University. Sample discussed his research on the behavior of juvenile bull sharks in the Florida Everglades. Using nearly 20 years of movement data and new field studies, Sample examines the way these sharks may be transporting nutrients across habitat boundaries, how they may be optimizing their movements to save energy, and how the different roles they specialize in may have implications for an ecosystem.

On March 4, tune in for “American Oystercatchers in Florida” with Matthew Anderson. Anderson, who is the Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves Manager with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, will discuss efforts to monitor and restore Florida’s American Oystercatcher populations. A state-designated threatened species, the shorebird has resident and wintering populations that face threats, including habitat loss, natural predation, and human impacts.

“Producing in the Wild” with Alexa Elliott closes out the series on April 1. Discover how the award-winning Changing Seas marine science documentary series was made with the series’ producer. On the air for 17 years and produced by South Florida PBS, Changing Seas has focused on a variety of topics, from American Samoa’s resilient coral reefs to cutting-edge experiments conducted at the world’s northernmost research station during the polar night.
