Hours after sweeping the 2015 Providencia Award given out by Discover The Palm Beaches, Loggerhead Marinelife Center reaped more recognition at Gretchen Scott Designs’ Turtle Time reception on Dec. 3.

The ocean conservation organization benefited from a night of sipping, snacking and shopping at the Jupiter boutique, where 50 percent of sales were donated to the nonprofit and its eco-minded mission.

“I’m thankful we did what we did,” store manager Kathy Williams said, noting the evening’s $4,000 in sales will translate into a $2,000 check for Loggerhead. “Gretchen loves to give back to the community, and she has a real passion about helping the turtles.”

The event marked the second year for the reception and previewed the third in a line of specially made turtle-print tunics benefiting the Juno Beach facility.

The print, titled “Turtle Time,” features an arribada of the threatened and endangered creatures in an amusing mosaic motif that will be available in blue-and-white, lime-and-turquoise and orange-and-pink color schemes. It will retail for $52.50 (women’s sizes) and $32.50 (children’s sizes), with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the center.

“It’s nice to be able to write them a check every month,” Williams said. “We really have a lovely partnership.”

Jack Lighton, president, CEO and interim director of development at Loggerhead Marinelife Center, attended the affair and talked about expansion plans. He said a project is in the works to double the number of turtle tanks onsite and add 16,000 square feet of indoor space to the property.

“It’s amazing what we’ve been able to accomplish,” he said. “We are very fortunate that way.”

The center averages a quarter-million visitors every year and treats upward of 70 injured and sick turtles. It also contributes heavily to tourism in Palm Beach County.
