Professional golfer Luke Donald returned from Italy last October with the Ryder Cup trophy and a newly acquired taste for the Negroni. Captain of the 2023 European Ryder Cup team, he is thrilled not only to bring home the championship but also to have his new favorite Italian drink on the menu at 1000 North, where he is an investor.

Donald has a storied golf career, including being ranked number one in the world for 56 weeks in 2011-2012. But captaining the European Ryder Cup team to victory was the proudest moment of his career. “It just seems to be in our DNA, especially for the Europeans, that the Ryder Cup means a lot,” says the 46-year-old Brit. “It has great history and a great rivalry with the U.S.” He has already been named team captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup, becoming Europe’s first repeat captain since 1995. The golf tournament will be back on U.S. soil in 2025, making a repeat win for Europe more challenging. “You have the crowd against you cheering for the U.S., so winning is more difficult,” says Donald. “Over the next year, I’ll be figuring out how to do that.”

In the meantime, he’ll be spending time in Jupiter with his wife and three daughters, hitting the local links with many of his peers who live in the area, and sipping cocktails at 1000 North. “They have a barrel-aged Negroni on the menu, which is quite tasty,” he says. “Any excuse for some Negroni or Italian wine…”

Fast talk with Luke Donald

Best wine at 1000 North: “Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir. It’s a good value and a very nice Pinot Noir.”

Food faves at 1000 North: “I love the hamachi tiradito, the ahi tuna poke, and the street corn Caesar salad for starters. I’m a steak guy, so I go for the Delmonico ribeye.”

Favorite local golf courses: “I love the Palm Beach Par 3 and PGA National. The Bear’s Club, McArthur Golf Club, and Grove XXIII are all very special places. There’s so much great golf around here, it’s hard to go wrong.”

Strangest thing in his golf bag: “Probably stretchy string that’s tied together by knitting needles. I use it as a putting aid.”
