Jules Aron, known as “The Healthy Bartender,” is out to prove drinking to your health isn’t an oxymoron. Here are five tips on how to order a healthy cocktail.
1. The simpler the cocktail, the better. Avoid sour mixes, simple syrups, processed sugars and artificial additives in your drinks. If in doubt, ask your bartender.
2. Choose organic or small-batch liquor brands for best quality products.
3. Look for bars that offer a selection of fresh fruit for their garnishes. They also can easily muddle any of the berries or citrus fruits that they have on hand to sweeten and flavor your drink naturally. If you order a mojito, ask if they have any fresh berries. If so, ask them to swap the sugar for muddled fruit. If you order a margarita, ask if they can muddle some lemon and lime wedges, or even orange slices if they have them, instead of adding sour mix.
4. Avoid frozen drinks as they use premade sugary syrups mixed with ice and liquor.
5. With that said, be mindful that creating a fresh cocktail takes time. Make sure that the bartender is not too busy to devote time to creating a fresh cocktail for you and that he or she has the ingredients on hand to do so.
