Rollerblading was a rite of passage for girls growing up in the 1990s. “I Rollerbladed as a kid,” says Jupiter resident Talia Schizzano. “It feels nostalgic and reminds me of being a young girl. It’s girlhood.” That carefree, youthful feeling is what Schizzano and Tequesta resident Chelsea Paine are recapturing with their in-line skating club known as The Blading Babes.
“We were on Jupiter Island by Coral Cove Park,” says Paine of the club’s origin story. “We went 7 miles that day.” “We were Rollerblading and feeling so alive and decided we should start a club,” adds Schizzano. “Chelsea is a social media whiz and I’m a videographer, so we knew that our skills would bring the club to life.”
Last June, the duo hosted their first monthly Blading Babes meetup. “We’ve had a lot of people who haven’t Rollerbladed since they were kids, and they don’t want to go alone,” says Paine. “It’s more accessible and less intimidating when you do it as a group.”
Schizzano says the experience really resonates with women. “These are women like us who haven’t touched their Rollerblades in years, and they come and do it and love it. They’re getting what we’re getting out of it: exercise, meeting new friends, and joy. We’re really building a community.”
