Palm Beach locals will have not one, but two, chances to meet “America’s Doctor” this week, as Dr. Oz comes to town for the annual WPBF 25 Health & Safety Festival and also makes an appearance at the Palm Beach International Film Festival in support of his daughter’s first feature film.
Dr. Mehmet Oz will headline the fifth annual health festival at the The Gardens Mall on Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The host of the Emmy-awarding “The Dr. Oz Show” (which was recently nominated for four daytime Emmys) will discuss health topics affecting South Florida. These include the Zika virus, medical marijuana, opioid addiction and aging well.
“When you talk to folks in a setting where they’re comfortable, they hear better. They listen better. They ask better. They learn better,” said Dr. Oz, who spends time with his family at his Palm Beach home.
Dr. Oz added that local health care events like these allow him to “biopsy America.”
“We often do biopsies to make sure we’re getting things right,” he said. “That’s what these big mall events do: You’re literally catching people as they’re trying to live their daily life and meeting them where they are.”
Joining Dr. Oz, Amy Robach, bestselling author and news anchor for “Good Morning America,” will share her personal breast cancer story and tips for leading a healthier life. Her 2015 book “Better: How I Let Go of Control, Held on to Hope, and Found Joy in My Darkest Hour” tells the story of her experience.
Besides the main stage talk, local medical experts will set up booths to answer questions on nutrition, beauty and wellness.
New this year, the festival has added a safety component based on feedback from last year’s attendees. Organizations like the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the Justice Network, and The Center for Missing and Exploited Children will address child safety, opioid danger and local scam alerts.
Since WPBF 25 is a sponsor of the festival, guests will be able to meet and take photos with the station’s local news anchors, and the First Alert Weather Team will return with its Mini Meteorologist Experience, which lets families learn how to forecast the weather.
Dr. Oz will already be in town earlier in the week, as he is also co-hosting a Q&A at the Palm Beach International Film Festival alongside his daughter Arabella Oz, who stars opposite Sam Heughan (“Outlander”) in the fantasy drama “Where the Starlight Ends.” The film screening will be held at the Cinemark in Boca Raton on Thursday, March 30, starting at 3:45 p.m.
