Self-Guided Tours Now Available At Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Through Mobile App

805

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse has become more accessible to the public with the help of a mobile app.

Tour Your Way gives guests choice and flexibility when they visit the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum. Visitors can choose to explore the history of Florida spanning over 5,000 years on the 120-acre waterfront property. The app provides educational points of interest throughout the heritage site.

Visitors who opt to do the self-guided tour through the app will find interpretive signs and docents staged at key areas to give directions and to share insights about Jupiter’s history.

Points of interest include the lighthouse, the “Keeping the Light at Jupiter Inlet” exhibit, a walk through the 1892 Tindall Pioneer Homestead, the banyan canopy and the museum and its gift shop.

Still want a guided tour? Don’t worry—in-depth guided tours by docents will continue to be offered twice daily at the lighthouse and museum for no extra cost.

Why haven’t self-guided tours been offered in the past? Because of U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

The Coast Guard arrived at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse in 1939, playing an important role during WWII and used the site for the next 75 years, most recently as a housing base for Coast Guard families.

In 1994, the Loxahatchee River Historical Society signed a long-term lease with the Coast Guard for the purpose of restoring, maintaining and opening the lighthouse to the public. The miliary’s active use of the site limited access to the property.

Now the Coast Guard no longer uses the site, making it more accessible to visitors.
