“Designing a pair of shoes has been on my artist bucket list for years,” says Katie Herman, a Tequesta-based artist known for her playful prints and enthusiastic embrace of color. When an opportunity arose to design a pair of smoking slippers for legacy brand House of Zalo, another woman-owned business, she didn’t hesitate. For the collaboration, Herman created a sea grape print, a nod to the bright, tropical environs in our area.
“I grew up in Jupiter and currently reside in Tequesta, so sea grapes tend to be a recurring subject,” she says. “Other than our iconic lighthouse, sea grapes always make me think of home.” Locally, the Village Bootery in Tequesta will carry the collaboration into spring. “The Village Bootery has been a favorite shoe store of the women in my family, myself included, for four generations,” says Herman. “I’m so excited for this to come full circle and get to see the shoes I designed for Zalo in the window of the store I’ve gone to since I was a little girl.”
