After years of renovating and flipping houses in Canada, Jon and Taylor Scurry moved full-time to Florida in 2018 with plans to retire early. But two years after settling into their new home in Palm Beach Gardens, they decided it was time to go back to work—opening Palm Club Design Group, a home renovation and design company in Jupiter, with partners Kate
and John Hill.

It was around that same time that the couple purchased a house across the street. The 4,800-square-foot, seven-bedroom, six-bath home was large enough to accommodate this family with four children. But it needed the couple’s design expertise (which meant another renovation). Luckily, the couple was up to the task.

“We were drawn to the second Palm Beach Gardens house because of its extra 2,000 square feet, where every child got a bedroom,” says Jon. “But we wanted to design the space with livable luxury.”

For this renovation, Jon and Taylor sought comfortable luxury for practical purposes. With their four children ranging in age from 8 to 13, three dogs (two schnauzers and a spaniel), a bunny, a parrot, and several fish, the environment had to be easy to maintain—yet suit their aesthetic.

“We like luxury, but it had to make sense for our family and lifestyle,” says Taylor. “We call our design ‘organic luxury.’”

The Scurrys met in 2006 as students at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Both grew up fascinated by beautiful homes. Raised in Dry Fork, Virginia, Jon recalls his family’s favorite post-church Sunday ritual involved driving past stately homes with great architecture and rich landscaping. It’s an interest Taylor, raised in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, shared, receiving a degree in interior design and fashion merchandising.

After graduation, the Scurrys moved briefly to Roanoke, Virginia, before relocating to Canada so Jon could work in the finance/investment business with Taylor’s father. They were busy building their family and becoming more interested in homes and design when Jon got the bug to flip houses on the side. “The economy was booming in Canada,” he remembers. “While working for Taylor’s dad, we started a side flipping business combining Taylor’s passion for cute design with my financial experience. We sourced material, hired subcontractors, and redid homes.”

While well immersed in Canadian real estate and design, the couple got involved with HGTV star Bryan Baeumler and his popular Canadian home renovation reality show called Leave It to Bryan. “Bryan and his wife, Sarah, were filming a show across the street when we met him,” says Jon. “In 2016, he renovated our house for the show while Taylor was pregnant. During the six weeks of filming, she had morning sickness. It was a time to remember!”

After selling their flipping business and relocating to Palm Beach Gardens at the end of 2020, both Taylor and Jon welcomed the chance to make this new renovation their own. “I love our house because it’s designed clean, making a beautiful statement with signature lamps, chairs, and varied unique pieces that blend easily with the other looks,” says Taylor.

The formal living room was designed as a balance between luxury and livability. A custom clean-lined, slope arm sofa in performance fabric from TCS Designs gives the space both style and durability. A modern backlit alabaster chandelier from Hudson Valley casts a soft, sophisticated glow. The velvet daybed from CB2 is complemented by a houndstooth chair that adds a low-key pattern. “Our round marble coffee table from Williams Sonoma Home brings it all together for family fun or for sophisticated entertaining,” says Jon.

The dining room—Taylor’s favorite—is anchored by large custom statement table overlooking the backyard pool area. “The room is light and airy,” she says. “We play board games there with the kids, entertain formally twice a month, and casually with neighbors even more often. It’s a room that gets used a lot.”

The Scurrys added a built-in bar to showcase Taylor’s ever-growing collection of seasonal dinnerware. A bold, sculptural chandelier from Visual Comfort brings an unexpected edge over the bird’s-eye maple dining chairs from Worlds Away. The burled oak buffet gives a nod to mid-century design.

Jon and Taylor wanted the kitchen to feel like the heart of their home. While they wanted it to be functional and high-tech, the couple agreed that it also had to be warm and beautiful. Clean lines and hardworking materials support the fast-paced rhythm of their family life, while thoughtful details elevate the look. A large island serves as a prep and breakfast space as well as a gathering place for family and friends.

Stunning dolomite marble countertops, custom cabinets, and an enameled black Italian range from ILVE are notable features of the well-designed, highly performing room. Artful pendant lighting comes from Visual Comfort with hardware from Classic Brass. “The kitchen is a space we designed for quiet mornings and a full house,” says Jon.

One of the most stylized spaces in their home is the powder room, where the couple wanted drama and personality. The custom marble sink makes a sculptural statement against marble tile, adding both texture and contrast. But the showstopper is the bold pink wallpaper from Gucci, rich with the flora and fauna of South Florida. “Our guests love this room,” says Jon proudly.

Another family favorite is the dramatic home theater designed for movie marathons and cozy nights at home. A custom 16-foot dark teal velvet sofa ensures comfort over a silk carpet by Stark. Richly saturated teal walls give the room an immersive feel.“This room is all about comfort and atmosphere,” says Jon. “After a long day we like to come home with the kids and watch television.”

Whether working on their own renovations or those for their variety of clients, like big ticket golfers and a baseball player, Jon and Taylor love the overall process of design. “We’re happy because we’re both creative and love to fulfill that creativity,” says Jon. “We are truly blessed.”
