This month, Jupiter’s Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is expecting a frozen iguana invasion (regardless of the weather) as the entire Palm Beach Cardinals team morphs into the Frozen Iguanas for a new breed of baseball fun. “A lot of minor league clubs are doing these theme-night collections. It’s like an alternate identity for the team,” says Mike Bauer, the stadium’s general manager. “We wanted something that tied to the community and was fun and different.”

Bauer admits that explaining the concept of frozen iguanas to a team based in St. Louis was not easy. “They didn’t understand it because they are not from here. They just didn’t get it.” To make their case, marketing and promotions manager Abbie Schultz sent along a series of news clips showing frozen iguanas falling out of trees. “Then they started to get it,” says Bauer.

At a dozen Saturday home games this month, the Palm Beach Cardinals will trade their traditional uniforms for blue-and-green jerseys, hats, socks, and belts featuring a fierce-looking frozen iguana. The stadium is amping up the fan experience to fit with the team’s alter ego. “We are doing a Hawaiian shirt giveaway and a giveaway with a bobble tail where just the tail moves,” says Schultz. “There will be something fun going on at each event.” Frozen Iguanas merchandise is already flying off the shelves in the team’s online store. “We went live and sold out in the first 36 hours,” says Schultz.
